Default Help with bathroom sink, PLEASE

OK, this is such a ridiculously small problem that y'all are gonna think I'm foolin' around, but I'm NOT. Over a year ago, the little plug thingy came outta my bathroom sick, so it's no longer able to be opened and closed by the little plunger thingy up behind the faucet. So for over a year now, instead of filling the sink with water to rinse my razor as I shave, I have been running the hot water during the entire shaving process, which is a waste. I tried to reconnect this darned thing and make it work again, but I don't see how. There must be some easy way to do this, right? The plastic nipple thingy inside the drain (see inset of picture) needs to go through the hole in the plug, but I can't get it in there. Surely, I don't have to take apart the pipes below the sink! Do I?? If someone can tell me a simple way to do this, I will be forever grateful. Well, OK, not forever, but for several days, minimum.

You should be able to turn the plunger(the part that's out right now ) so that the tab is towards you as you stand at the sink, put it down in the drain and catch the lever with the hole. You may have to angle the plunger a little to miss the lever on the way down but it should work.

That's what it seemed like to me, but I couldn't. I tried a few times. Even wondered if I should maybe hold the plunger down (to keep the nipple from going down) and "tap" the plug in with a mallet.

Maybe it's one of those puzzle type things, where I need to get precisely the right orientation? I'll try again tonight....thanks for your reply!

Try to unscrew the pivot joint nut (on tailpiece of drain) take out the pop-up rod. It's got a ball on the end to pivot in the nut. Put the plunger all the way in the drain with the flat side of the hole along the same side as where the rod pokes out. Then re-attach the nut and rod and try pulling up the lever to see if it works. You might have to play with it to get the rod in the proper position before you screw the pivot nut back on.

We have the same thing on our drains here... I must say I prefer the old fashioned metal stuff to this.

I know you have fixed the problem, but I'll add my 2 cents worth anyhow just in case someone looks at the archives someday.

Fixing it was really rather simple.

I simply put the drain plug in at a right angle, that is the circle thing and the lever thing inside the drain parallel to each other. I pushed the drain release down (as if I were emptying the sink) then I forcefully turned the insert with the circle on it clockwise thus hooking the circle with the bar. It snicked into place and has been working as good as one of these plastic abortions can ever since.

Glad you got it figured out, and its all someone elses fault!
